Darryl Baldwin (DE, Solon HS)
Dave: This is a big who brings some of the skills and versatility of Cameron Heyward, though he may lack his motor. He is quick enough to play end, but has the size to play tackle. Not getting a lot of national recognition, but he may one of the gems of this class.
Drew: Baldwin's film is very impressive, especially for a guy that no one talks about. His size reall stands out, and his 4.7 forty is even more remarkable for a guy his size. I think Buckeye fans need to remember Baldwin's name, because he has all the intangibles to be player.
Drew Basil (K, Chillicothe HS)
Dave: Rarely do we get excited about kickers, but the Buckeyes under Tressel stress both punting and kicking and Basil could play at either position. Due to his strong leg he might challenge Barclay right away, especially on kickoffs. This was actually a position of need, with two senior specialists graduating, so it was a good get for OSU.
Drew: Basil is a solid pickup, and I think he has a good leg. Unfortunately, it appears as if he will have to contribute early in his career, which leaves little time to be "coached up." He is the best specialists in the state, so let's hope he lives up to that billing.
Corey Brown (WR, Springfield, PA Cardinal O'Hara HS)
Dave: It is always nice to get good players out of Pennsylvania and the staff has done a great job in the Keystone state in recent years. Brown is an athlete who could play corner or wideout, but my guess is that he starts out on offense. Possessing big time speed, he kind of replaces "Flash" Thomas, and will hopefully be more effective. Might get looked at as a kick returner right away.
Drew: What jumps out as you watch Brown is his speed, which makes him deadly in the open field. What makes him even scarier is his playmaking ability, which allows him to cut and make guys miss. That is something you just can't teach, and Brown has it. On top of that, I think he has very solid hands for a guy who played more running back than wideout in high school. Mark my words, if he stays healthy he will be a great one at Ohio State.
Christian Bryant (DB, Glenville HS)
Dave: I thought he was a must get for the Buckeyes due to our need for restocking the DB cupboard, besides the fact he hails from Glenville and nobody wants to see the pipeline dry up. Although I doubt he plays minutes at corner in 2010, I do look for him to earn time on special teams and eventually become a good one.
Drew: Bryant is a leader and solid young man, which usually equates success under Tressel. It doesn't hurt that he has mad skills as defensive back, and 4.5 speed as well. He could play either safety or corner, which means he might find his way on the field quicker than some think.
David Durham (OLB, Charlotte, NC Charlotte Christian School)
Dave: A forgotten man after committing early, the recruiting services aren't giving him much credit but I think he is one of the dark horse candidates. Although he will need to bulk up some, I think he has the same kind of body and skills as Nathan Williams, who was himself a pleasant surprise a couple years ago. Keep an eye on this young man!
Drew: Durham is a physical player, and he crushes opponents when he hits them. Rarely do players with his motor and drive not make themselves into something at Ohio State, and I don't think he will be any different. He could find himself at several different positions in the future, but will need to improve his speed if wants to play outside linebacker.
Taylor Graham (QB, Wheaton, IL Wheaton North HS)
Dave: For some reason I can't warm up to Graham, possibly because I would have preferred a more athletic QB. I remember watching his dad in scarlet and gray and although he had a very good arm, he was a statue, and that doesn't seem to fit our style of play. However Taylor is a big, tall strong armed pro-style quarterback who might just prove me wrong.
Drew: Taylor has had two things going against him on the recruiting scene. First, he has battled injuries throughout his career, and second, he was the third choice for the Buckeyes after Montana and Hendrix turned the staff down. With that said, he does have strong arm and is very accurate. I think his mobility is a problem, but I still feel he projects much better than Boeckman or Bauserman have/will.
Chad Hagan (DB, Canonsburg, PA Canon-Mcmillan SHS)
Dave: Maybe the least ballyhooed player in this class, he is either a very fast linebacker or a big safety. You can't teach speed, and he has it, so Hagan might be a pleasant surprise. Some are comparing to Anderson Russell, but Hagan is faster...hopefully he has better hands, too!
Drew: I think Hagan will play safety for sure, and he will bring a physicality to that position that not many of the current players on the roster have. I think he a run stuffer, and his highlights show that he is not afraid of contact at all. The only reason I see him playing linebacker is if he struggles with his instincts in the defensive backfield.
Jonathan Hankins (DT, Detroit, MI Southeastern HS)
Dave: The really big defensive tackle that Buckeye fans have been hungry for, Hankins should be a good run stuffer. Although OSU didn't get the more coveted Sharrif Floyd, this was a fine acquisition at a position of need. Will need to work hard in the classroom and the weight room but could be a good one.
Drew: There are a lot of big guys out there, but what separates Hankins from the pack is the quickness of his feet. He also has a great nose for the football, and wraps guys up well. As long as he takes his grades seriously, he will get a chance to show off his dominating skills on Saturdays in Columbus.
Carlos Hyde (RB/FB, Fork Union, VA Fork Union MA)
Dave: Better late than never. After a detour at Fork Union due to grades his arrival in 2010 is much anticipated. Ohio State fans love big backs, and Carlos brings the size and has enough speed to be a good power back. While he shouldn't compare to Beanie Wells, Hyde could become a short yardage back this season, and develop into a complete runner in future years.
Drew: Hyde was one of my favorite players in the '09 class, and I think he has a much higher upside than most Buckeye fans are aware of. At 235 pounds he is huge, and adds some serious speed to all that power. What makes Hydes project even better at the next level is his versatility. He played a lot of fullback in high school, and already understands blocking and has great hands coming out of the backfield.
James Louis (WR, Delray Beach, FL Atlantic HS)
Dave: One of the stars of this class, Louis could see the field immediately. He is fast, has great acceleration, and good hands. Needs to get a little stronger, but if Duron Carter fails to get his grades in order, James could enter the number three receiver sweepstakes.
Drew: Louis is a stud, and has major speed. What I really like is how he makes people miss, and changes direction with ease. The Buckeyes have brought in a lot of high quality receivers in recent classes, but I'm not sure there is guy on the roster who can take it to the house on any given play like Louis.
Scott McVey (LB, St. Ignatius HS)
Dave: Although he was hurt much of his senior year and isn't the biggest guy around, McVey might be special. Buckeye fans are hoping for the kind of success enjoyed by A.J. Hawk and James Laurinaitis, who, like McVey, failed to wow most of the national recruiting services. I doubt he winds up that good, but this kid has instincts and loves to hit. He's just a football player and will find his way on the field one way or another.
Drew: I have made it clear on multiple occasions that I am a McVey fan. I realize his senior season was a disappointment because of injuries, but don't count this kid out. He runs sideline to sideline well, and has a motor that never stops. I'm not sure he contributes early on, but I see him developing into a typical starting Big Ten linebacker.
J.T. Moore (DL, Boardman HS)
Dave: The first player in the '10 class to verbal, Moore has been forgotten by many fans. Listed as a defensive end, one wonders if the staff plans to bulk him up and move him inside. He lacks the burst to be a great pass rusher, but he is physical and plays the run well. Might be a bit of a project, but if he is patient, Moore could be a solid player in two or three years.
Drew: Moore didn't excite me much when he committed, but really stepped up his game over the length on his senior season. His quickness off the ball is solid, but overall speed is lacking at the point. He does move down the line well though and seems to always be around the ball. I'm not sure what he projects as at the level, but is solid player all around.
Andrew Norwell (OL, Anderson HS)
Dave: Another player who missed most of his senior season, Norwell is a potentially excellent offensive tackle, and you can never have enough of those. He'll need to pack on more muscle, but Andrew is physical and especially good at running blocking. He is one of the most important players in this class due to his position and his ranking within the state of Ohio.
Drew: Norwell is one of the most respected kids in this class, and was playing in the U.S. Army All-American game had he not been injured. I think he is the next really great tackle at Ohio State, because he has the intangibles and attitude to be a big time player. His film is very impressive to watch.
Verlon Reed (DB, Marion-Frankin HS)
Dave: The Bucks went after this local guy a little late in the process, so he isn't as well known as others in the class. An excellent athlete with height and speed he might be a "spread" quarterback, a receiver, or defensive back. My guess is the staff is thinking safety first. Might get some action of special teams, but it will be interesting to see where he finally winds up.
Drew: Reed could be the biggest sleeper in this class, because he is major athlete with versatility. The staff has become famous for molding guys like Reed into players, and I am excited to see his potential in the secondary. It's a little hard to guess since all of his film is as a quarterback, but I keep hearing great reviews about his athleticism.
Bradley Roby (DB, Suwanee, GA Peachtree Ridge HS)
Dave: Originally a Vanderbilt verbal, OSU went after Roby late and managed to pick him up. He is fast as supposedly has good hands, so he could play receiver, but look for him at cornerback for the scarlet and gray. Not a big name recruit, but I have a feeling he is going to be a good one.
Drew: Roby has two things going for him, he is smart and he is very fast. Those two qualities will get him on the field if he progresses under Tressel and company. I also appreciate his height, which is always a bonus when recruiting a corner. He picked up some major SEC offers late in the process after committing to the Buckeyes, so he is player.
Roderick Smith (RB, Ft. Wayne, IN Paul Harding HS)
Dave: Maybe the gem of this class, Smith is the kind of big, fast back that Buckeye fans drool for. May not be quite as much of a physical "freak" as Beanie, but he hits the hole faster. This Hoosier product has star written all over him, but may need to be patient, as he enters a crowded backfield.
Drew: This young man has everything you want in a running back. He is huge, physical, has great vision, and breakway speed. Many compare him to Beanie Wells, but I think he moves better than Beanie. He hits the hole in the same way, but I think he could be a more complete back.
Jamel Turner (DE/LB, Fork Union, VA Fork Union MA)
Dave: Has he not run into some off field problems that forced him to head to Fork Union, the talking heads would be giving him a lot more praise. Possessing excellent speed Turner will probably begin at outside linebacker, but if he adds weight might move to defensive end. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up being the 2010 answer to Thaddeus Gibson.
Drew: This young man is a physical freak, who comes off the ball as fast as any player I have ever seen. I think the staff will do everything in their power to put him at DE, and allow him to use his skills to disrupt quarterbacks. If he wants it bad enough when he comes to Columbus, I think he could be star and future first round pick. One of the most gifted athletes I have seen on film in a long time!
Tyrone Williams (WR, Shaw HS)
Dave: I don't remember the Buckeyes ever having a receiver as tall as Williams and his size is intriguing. The amazing thing is that he is also pretty fast and while not polished at wideout yet, he has a lot of upside. Fans may need to be patient with Williams, and allow him to learn the ropes.
Drew: Williams is a player that excites me. At 6-7, he can go up and get the ball in a way that few players can. In fact, I have heard some people compare him to a young Randy Moss in the way he elevates. There are criticisms about his route running and quickness off the line, but I think the staff will use him as a possession receiver where neither are a major concern.
