Latest Update on Seantrel Henderson 01/12/2010
2 Comments

OT Seantrel Henderson will announce his college choice on February 3rd, the first day of the national signing period. According to his father all eight schools (Ohio State, USC, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Miami (FL), Iowa, and Minnesota) are all in the mix.

"All eight schools are neck and neck," Henderson's father insisted to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Even more interesting is that Seantrel has yet to become academically eligible to this point, scoring only a 17 on his ACT. He retakes the test on February 6th, with hopes to bump his score up to at least a 19.

Perfect Fit: Kiffin to USC 01/12/2010

ESPN is reporting that Lane Kiffin will replace Pete Carroll at USC. Kiffin only spent one year at Tennessee, and has yet to show that he is really all he is hyped to be. Between his stops with the Raiders and Volunteers, his ego was about all the public has gotten a chance to see. Good luck Trojan fans, enjoy having another shady coach! Anyways, just another reminder of how nice it is to have a stable program and consistent coach.

News & Views: Carroll, Meyer, and Recruiting 01/11/2010

1) It is official, Pete Carroll is headed to Seattle. No doubt this story will be on SportsCenter consistently in the coming weeks, especially considering all the allegations surrounding the USC program right now. Reports are that something will be handed down from the NCAA to the Trojans soon, and you have to think Carroll knew. Even if that isn't his motive, it is a pretty shady time to leave. As Ivan Maisel says, Carroll is walking out now that things have finally gotten hard.

"When it came time to dig deeper, to start the climb up the mountain again, Carroll headed out the door."

2) Urban Meyer is taking a leave of absence, yet Florida is recruiting like never before. In fact, they are putting together what many believe could be the best class ever. What is most interesting is that five huge recruits have jumped on board since Meyer's announcement (4 five stars), and Meyer is recruiting them. Sound fishy? Well, many including Ray McNulty of The Detroit News are starting to ask some questions. He has some great things in his article on the subject matter today.

"So what are we to think? That Meyer's heart condition is more serious than he wants us to know? That his leave of absence is nothing more than a way to buy time and keep recruits on board until next month's national signing day? That he already knows he won't coach again? I hope I'm wrong."

3) Anyone else sick of reading all the crap on the Buckeye message boards? Well, I am! Don't get me wrong, I was bummed to see the Buckeyes have a tough day at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but there is no reason lose all sanity. I really can't believe how many Buckeye fans have lost all perspective over the announcements of a couple of 18-19 year olds. Duane Long in his latest blog post is also getting sick of the lack of perspective. Good read, and as usual he brings down the hammer.

4) Last night, Beanie helped the Cardinals win a thriller over Green Bay 51-45. He got 14 carries and went 91 yards, averaging 6.5 a carry. Pretty sharp for his first playoff game, and he continues to show what a steal he was in the late first round. I still think the Cardinals should give him more carries, especially around the goal line. I will never understand Tim Hightower as powerback.

After all the "insider" information and debating, we finally get a chance to clear up the recruiting picture today. Latwan Anderson an Sharrif Floyd will be announcing during the game, so stay tuned as we hit you up with updates. Not only that, but Buckeye fans will get to watch prospects Seantrel Henderson, Christian Bryant, and Matt James. Go Bucks!

Update #1 (1:21 pm) - Latwan Anderson does indeed pick West Virginia. I would have loved to had his talent and speed in scarlet an gray, but I am not sure if he is a Jim Tressel kind of player. Regardless he does give the Buckeyes the cold shoulder, and he chooses the school that has given him the full court press from the beginning. Good luck Latwan...

Update #2 (2:42 pm) - Sharrif Floyd picks the Gators. Two guys picking today, and the Buckeyes come in at number two for both of them. The Floyd decision hurts and Buckeyes fans are going to freak out about how Tressel can't close, but 2010 still looks bright. With Henderson, Bryant, James and Roby, the Buckeyes will close this class out strong. Who knows, Tressel is famous for grabbing up a few guys no one expected at the last second. Take a deep breath everyone!

2010 Recruiting: Shades of 2007 01/07/2010

A lot of Buckeye fans have a sick feeling in their stomachs right now. Believe me I feel it too. The 2010 class has never really gained much momentum for Ohio State, and most of the big names are still on the board. Talk of guys like Floyd, Henderson and Hicks is dominating all the boards right now, and there is no reason to feel very confident about any of them.

If this sounds familiar to you, it is probably because the Buckeyes sat in the same recruiting situation just three years ago. That year, in 2007, going into January the class had never really heated up. Don't get me wrong, there were some solid commitments from Brandon Saine, Boom Herron, Eugene Clifford and James Scott, but everyone was holding their breath for the big names out there.

As January came, there was a lot of anticipation because we were all waiting to hear guys like Anthony Davis, Joseph Barksdale and Ben Martin (pictured) pick The Ohio State University and put on the scarlet and gray hat. The insiders said the Buckeyes were favored, things looked great, all we needed was the confirmation. Instead of excitement though, Buckeye Nation was hit with disappointment. When the dust settled, Davis chose Rutgers, Barksdale went to LSU, and Ben Martin (Ohio boy) headed to Tennessee.

So, it's not hard to understand why Buckeye fans are still a little gun-shy.

Dave's IMO: Buckeye Recruiting Angst 01/06/2010

Dave Thurman (8:06 pm)

Buckeye delirium over recruiting has hit an all time high in January, 2010, and at times it is downright comical.  Although nobody has jumped off a bridge yet (that we know of) there probably have been some fist fights if the boards on various websites are any indication.  I have never before seen the OSU faithful in such a tizzy over recruiting and that is saying a lot!

For the first time in the past four years, Ohio State is coming off a big bowl victory, and looks like it will retain most of its top players.  Although Thad Gibson is turning pro, players like Cameron Heyward, Chimdi Chekwa and Justin Boren have told the NFL they can wait, and it doesn't look like any of the other potential seniors will enter the draft.  However, in the midst of all this great news, some fans can't seem to handle the bliss and are turning to recruiting to feed their need for negativity.

Now in all honesty there is some cause for concern when one looks at recent history.  Terrelle Pryor aside, Coach Tressel has had his biggest successes in recruiting early in the process, and there have been some big disappointments in January and February.  Most out of state studs who have waited until the end to announce their college choice have seemed to spurn the Buckeyes.  But even with that historical perspective there is no need to get hysterical.

No Longer the "Weak 11" 01/06/2010

You have to love graphics like this on ESPN (Photo via Sportscenter.com)
Not only was the 09-10 bowl season a story of redemption for the Buckeyes, but one for the entire Big Ten. The conference posted its first winning record since 2002, going 4-3 overall. Even more impressive was the four victories over top fifteen teams, two of which were BCS bowls. Let us not forget, the Big Ten had dropped six straight BCS bowls.

No one expected a thing from the conference this year, many projecting one win, so hopefully this proves to everyone that the Big Ten has rebounded. I think it is time for some "Big Ten" chants!

Big Day of Comings and Goings 01/05/2010

Drew Thurman (7:07 pm)

Today was a huge day for the Buckeyes, and many questions got answered on the recruiting front and with potential seniors. It figures this would happen while I buried behind a ton of work. Anyways, enough about me, lets get to the news. The day started out with the news that Thaddeus Gibson would indeed head to the NFL. All the expects had been projecting this move for the last few months of the season, but it still was no fun hearing about his departure. You have to love what he had to say about heading to the NFL though.

"I am not leaving the Buckeye family. I wish the team the very best in the upcoming years and I thank all my teammates for all their support. I will keep in touch with my Buckeye family and I love them all. I will always bleed scarlet and gray."

The bad vibes produced by Gibson leaving didn't last very long in Buckeye Nation, as moments later we learned that Cameron Heyward and Chimdi Chekwa would be staying for their senior seasons. The departure of these guys would have been devastating, and their return gives the Buckeyes a realistic shot at a title run in 2010.

Big Recruiting Week For Buckeyes 01/04/2010

Drew Thurman (12:43 pm)

With the Rose Bowl victory now in the past, the focus in January turns to the recruiting front. Especially this year, because the Buckeyes have so many names left on the board. Names like...

OL - Seantrel Henderson
OL - Matt James
DL - Sharrif Floyd (pictured)
DL - Jonathan Hankins
LB - Jordan Hicks
DB - Christian Bryant
DB - Latwan Anderson
DB - Bradley Roby

There is tons of speculation around each of these players, but this week we will get a chance to finally see some answers. This Saturday at 1 p.m. a couple of Buckeye prospects are set to announce at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. According to Rivals, both Sharrif Floyd and Latwan Anderson will annouce during the game. Mike Farrell seems to think that both are Buckeye leans, especially Floyd.

Fellow Rivals writer, Adam Gorney, says that teammates Anderson and Bryant are no packaged deal. That makes sense after Anderson claimed that West Virginia was his leader this last week. So, Saturday Buckeye fans will get a chance to see if Anderson is bluffing, or if he really will give the Buckeyes the cold shoulder. Regardless, we will finally get some answers and will see who will fill out the 2010 class.

Rose Bowl Showcased Buckeyes Big Three 01/03/2010

Drew Thurman (5:28 pm)

For the first time in three years, Buckeye fans finally have something to cheer about in the offseason. After the 26-17 win over Oregon in the Rose Bowl Friday night, we all can finally start putting the big game blues behind us. It would be easy to get so caught up in redemption and finally shutting the media up, that we lose sight of how impressive of a victory it really was for the Buckeyes. For the first time this season, maybe since 2006, Ohio State finally showcased their big three; quarterback play, defense, and coaching. Let's take a look...

Quarterback Play:

Pryor finally showcased the maturity that had been lacking all season long, especially in his decision making. He completed 22 of 37 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns, while only throwing one interception. He also added 72 big rushing yards, showcasing his dual-threat ability. What was even more impressive was the wide array of throws he was able to make. He completed everything from deep passes to short slants, and of course extended plays in a way only he can. Maybe the most impressive play of the game was his 13 yard touchdown pass to Saine on the opening drive. Pryor scanned the field, moved slightly away from the pressure, and delivered the ball to Saine on the sideline for the touchdown. It was the start of something great in the Rose Bowl, and it showed patience and maturity in Pryor. That sort of play had been missing all year long.
