Their non-conference schedule was pretty pathetic, though their near upset in Ann Arbor a week ago did raise some eyebrows. The big difference is that Indiana's offense seems to be performing better every single week. In fact, their offense put almost a hundred more yards up against the Wolverines last week. I realize that Michigan plays very soft "D," but the 467 yards the Hoosiers gained was pretty impressive. Know the Opposition: Illinois 09/25/2009

As ugly as that opening loss was, the Illini should strike fear for Big Ten teams because of their high potent offense (436.5 yards a game). Much like the 2007 edition of the Illini, this team has the ability to be scary when the offense puts everything together. Coming off a bye week, you have to wonder if that is a possibility this weekend. Fighting Illini Always Want Buckeye Blood 09/22/2009
Drew Thurman (10:04 am) This Saturday a rested Illini squad will come to Columbus, just off a bye week. Talk of Zook's crew has been hush hush after the 37-9 beating they took to open the season against Missouri, but that doesn't make them any less lethal come Saturday. For whatever reason, Illinois always seems to give the Buckeyes a little extra fight. Even the other Big Ten powerhouses, Penn State and Michigan, don't seem to get the same kind of physical play from the Illini that the Buckeyes do. At least in recent history, they are ready for blood when they see the Scarlet and Gray. Fans will obviously never forget the showdown in Champaign in 2002, as the Buckeyes barely escaped with a 23-16 victory in overtime. Then the two teams would get a break for two years until they met again in 2005. That year, in Zook's first season, the Illini won zero conference games and got crushed 40-2 by the Buckeyes in Columbus (Smith and Ginn rocked them). Since 2005 though, the Buckeyes have not had an easy game against Zook and company. One has to believe that Zook, an Ohio native, feels beating the Buckeyes will build more momentum both for the program and for recruiting than any other game. It sure seems that the last three years, the Illini have circled their collision with Ohio State on the calender. Let's take a look back at how those games played out... Obviously losing a leader like Mark Sanchez (3207 yards and 34 TD) hurts, but Barkley showed in week one against San Jose State that he knows how to command the offense. In that game he went 15 of 19 for 233 yards with one touchdown. On top of that, it is clear that Barkley has some serious talent because he beat out two top ten recruited quarterbacks on his own team (Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain). Dave Thurman (10:16 am) I think is's fitting that this past weekend was our national celebration of Labor Day, because our beloved Buckeyes have plenty of work to do following a spotty performance against Navy. Of course the $64,000 question is, can this squad defeat USC on Saturday? Well, if I was a betting man I would put my money on the Trojans but I haven't given up hope. Quickly let me highlight some reasons for optimism and then some causes for fear and trepidation. Positives that might lead to victory: - The defensive ends (Heyward, Gibson & Williams) are strong and I think they'll be able to bring some pressure on Barkley. A true freshmen quarterback in Ohio Stadium before 105,000 screaming fans, and a national TV audience might be suseptible to pressure, and I have high hopes that we can bring some. - Two words: Terrelle Pryor. Enough said. His athleticism and competiveness is invaluable, and you have to think he'll be primed for a big, breakout performance. - Some good weapons to throw the ball to. Sanzenbacher, Pryor and Carter look like they can make the tough catch, and with a new commitment to hitting the tight end, both Ballard and Stoneburner become weapons that can spread out the vaunted USC defense. The Good, Bad, & Ugly of Playing Navy 09/04/2009
Drew Thurman (1:41 pm) Saturday's opener against the Midshipmen should bring out some mixed emotions from fans and players. With such a distinct tradition and style of play, Navy presents a different kind of challenge for the Buckeyes... The Good: Honoring the Military Forces What should be memorable about tomorrow is the respect Ohio State is showing Navy. Fans will get a chance to be part of a football experience that is quite unique, especially inside Ohio Stadium. First, fans will get a chance to cheer on John Glenn and his wife, Annie, as they dot the "i" of Script Ohio. Glenn, who is a former U.S. Astronaut, Senator, and Naval Pilot, is one of the few non-band memebers to ever get the chance to do this. Glenn is just the beginning though. Fans will also get to watch F-18 fighter jets fly over the stadium, OSU alumni killed in U.S. wars will be displayed on the scoreboard after the game, and each fan will be given a small American flag to wave. It will be an incredibly neat atmosphere, and something that makes me proud to be a Buckeye fan. Know the Opposition: Navy 09/02/2009
