Serving Up Some Cold Revenge 03/04/2011
Dave Thurman (9:31 pm) "Revenge is a dish best served cold." So says the old proverb which has been quoted in a number of excellent movies (The Godfather, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and Kill Bill, Vol. 1 to name three). I'm not sure I have ever grasped the exact meaning of those words, however. I think it means that revenge is best when it is calculated, and performed in cold-blooded fashion. Not that it really matters. This Sunday I want revenge and I'll take it hot, cold or lukewarm. I have learned to hate those nasty weasels from up north, and nothing would give me greater satisfaction than to get a double helping of this delicious dish known as revenge. Why exactly has Wisconsin become public enemy number one in my book? Let me count the ways: 1. The Badger football team ruined what could have been a magical 2010 season for the Buckeyes who wound up 12-1, with that one ugly blemish on their resume. 2. Wisconsin hoopsters defeated Ohio State at Madison, ending a perfect 2010-11 season that began with 24 straight victories. 3. The fans in Madison are regularly the most obnoxious in the business, doing everything but urinating on opposing players, and that only because it would get them thrown in jail. However, as Jared Sullinger found out this year, they will spit on you if they get the chance. 4. Michigan has been so bad of late they have vacated their hold on being public enemy number one! 5. Bo Ryan is not only one of the most insufferable coaches to watch on the sideline (a chronic crybaby to say the least) but his remarks in the wake of the Sullinger incident proved him to be classless as well. 6. The media (especailly ESPN), which loves to bash the Buckeyes, have shown the Badger fans storming the field and court about 100,000 times in the past few months. So you could say that I am more than ready for some revenge...not that it will be easy. 1 Comment Know the Opposition: Arkansas Razorbacks 01/03/2011

After a long 5 1/2 weeks since Ohio State defeated the Wolverines, it is finally game time, as the Buckeyes prepare to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Sugar Bowl Tuesday night. If it wasn't enough that the team had to face all of the questions concerning Ohio State's 0-9 all time bowl record against SEC teams, they have also had to deal with TatGate. But all of that won't matter at 8:30 pm when the ball is finally teed up in the Superdome. Two high powered offenses will take the field in New Orleans in what promises to be an exciting contest as the past is pushed aside, and we may not know the winner until midnight. Arkansas presents the Silver Bullets with their toughest challenge of the season, boasting a potent offense that averages 489 yards and 37.3 points per game. The straw that stirs the drink is quarterback Ryan Mallett, a fourth year junior who began his career at Michigan. After a very good initial season in Fayetteville in 2009, he was spectacular this year, throwing for 3592 yards, completing 66.5% of his passes, while tossing 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The big Texan has possibly the strongest arm of any quarterback in the nation, and is complete control of the Razorback offense. If there is one knock on Mallett it is the fact that he is not mobile, and is basically no threat to run the ball. He had a couple of games where interceptions hurt him as well, but for the most part he was outstanding - probably the best quarterback in the nation not named Cameron Newton. Meet the Opposition: Ryan Mallett 01/02/2011
![]() Dave Thurman (9:04 pm) While the Buckeyes prepare for their January 4th game versus Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl we are previewing a few of the key players for the Razorbacks. So far we have looked at running back Knile Davis, defensive end Jake Bequette, tight end D.J. Williams, and linebacker Jerry Franklin. Today we conclude with quarterback Ryan Mallett, who probably needs no introduction. Mallett, who hails from Texarkana, Texas, was the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Texas in 2006, and was ranked by some scouting services as the top signal caller in all of America. Upon graduation from Texas High School he signed with Michigan where he earned playing time as a true freshman throwing for 892 yards and 7 touchdowns. However, when Lloyd Carr stepped down, the big, dropback passer (6'6", 238 lbs) realized he wasn't a good fit in Rich Rodriguez' spread option attack and transferred to Arkansas. Hog fans have been thanking their lucky stars ever since, After sitting out the 2008 season, "Big Tex" took over the Razorback offense and immediately began putting up huge numbers. In 2009 he threw for 3627 yards (55.8%) and 30 touchdowns, but has been even more accurate this season, hitting 66.5% of his passes, for 3592 yards, and 30 more touchdowns, with the bowl game still to play. A candidate for about every quarterback award that is given, Mallett has set or tied 38 Arkansas' team and stadium records in his two years in Fayetteville. Although he still has one season of eligibility left, most folks look for him to head to the NFL following the Sugar Bowl. Possessing a cannon for an arm, Mallett has all the tools that make pro teams drool. He can complete every throw in the book, but more than that, can fit the ball into a tiny window. The big right hander is most dangerous when given time in the pocket, so Ohio State will look to pressure him, and will probably employ multiple defenses including a number of blitz packages. If he gets on a roll, which Mallett is more than capable of doing, it could be a long game for the Silver Bullets. Although every contest has a number of key match-ups, this is the one everyone will be watching. Ultimately the game will probably be decided by the level of success achieved by the Razorback quarterback. If he lights it up look for Arkansas to secure the victory, However, if he can be slowed down, even a little bit, the Buckeyes are a good bet to get the win. Meet the Opposition: Jake Bequette 12/10/2010
![]() Dave Thurman (10:42 am) While the Buckeyes prepare for their January 4th game versus Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl we are previewing a few of the key players for the Razorbacks. So far we have looked at running back Knile Davis, and now move ahead to big, defensive end Jake Bequette. Bequette is a redshirt junior who possesses nice size for an end at 6'5", 271 lbs, along with good speed (4.8 40). Hailing from Little Rock, Jake has been a starter from day one, and after two solid seasons, he came into his own in 2010. He enters the Sugar Bowl with 31 tackles, including 8 for loss, with 7 sacks. On a squad that has done an excellent job of getting to the quarterback (37 sacks), Bequette is the team leader. He also has 2 pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Certainly one of the keys for the OSU offense will be protecting quarterback Terrelle Pryor, and it is imperative that tackles Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts slow down Bequette and his fellow defensive ends, Tenarius Wright and Demario Ambrose, who have combined for an additional 9.5 sacks. If the seat of Pryor's uniform winds up dirty it could be a long night in New Orleans for the Buckeyes. Watch to see who wins this battle in the trenches, as Ohio State will have their hands full against the relentless Bequette, Meet the Opposition: Knile Davis 12/07/2010
![]() The speedy Knile Davis Dave Thurman (9:01 am) As the Buckeyes prepare to face the University of Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, I plan to introduce Ohio State fans to a few of the key players for the Razorbacks. Let's start with Knile Davis (pronounced like the Nile River). Davis kind of came out of nowhere this season as a sophomore running back, since his freshmen numbers weren't especially noteworthy: 163 yards (4.8 ypc) and 4 td's. However, he was banged up in 2009, and Arkansas coaches looked for big things from him this year. He certainly delivered, rushing for 1183 yards, averaging 6.6 per carry, and scoring 13 touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 128 yards and 1 touchdown. Like Boom Herron for OSU, Knile came on strong down the stretch with four straight 100 yard games to close out the year, and averaged 148 yards per game over the final six contests. Early on, he shared time with junior Broderick Green, but eventually took over as "the man" in the second half of the season. Davis combines size (6', 220) with excellent speed (a reported 4.37 40), and will be a huge challenge for the Buckeye defense to stop. While opponents key in on Ryan Mallett and the Arkansas passing game, the sophomore from Missouri City, Texas, has been known to bust a long one which often proves to be a backbreaker. Watch to see how well the Silver Bullets can contain number 7 as it will be one of the keys to victory come January 4th. Five Things to Watch For: Wolverine Edition 11/27/2010
![]() Dave and Drew Thurman (9:14 am) Check out our Know the Opposition feature for full information on TSUN. Below we have five things to look for as the Buckeyes host RichRod and the Wolverines: 1) Watch to see if the Silver Bullets can slow down Denard Robinson. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object, as Michigan's big play offense (ranked #5 in the nation at 514.6 ypg) faces Ohio State's stingy defense (ranked #3 in the nation at 241.5 ypg). There is no doubt that Robinson is the key for UM, and it is crazy to think that the Buckeyes will completely shut him down, However, if they can contain the swift quarterback and keep him from making too many big plays, Michigan will be in trouble, because he has been their offense for much of the season. Ohio State will also try and force Mr. Robinson into some turnovers, which may be the best way to stop the Wolverine offense. He has battled turnovers in the biggest games this season, and when you add it that the Buckeyes have been very opportunistic, it could produce a similar result to last year's. 2) Watch Tressel's offensive game plan. Michigan's defense has been down right awful (445.2 yards, 33.5 points per game). It will be interesting to see how the Buckeyes attack, because the Wolverines have been equally ineffective stopping the run and the pass. No doubt Pryor will want to light up the young secondary, but on cold, November days, Tressel usually prefers to play old-fashioned smashmouth football. Besides the fact that it will wear a smaller Wolverine defense down, it will also keep Denard Robinson and the Michigan offense off the field. So we expect Boom Herron should get every opportunity to rush for the 107 yards he needs to reach 1,000 for the year, but hopefully OSU will feature a diversified attack. And, since it is Michigan week it will be interesting to see if the coaches will throw in a couple of trick plays or new formations. Know the Rival: TSUN 11/26/2010

That School Up North invades Ohio Stadium on Senior Day 2010, and the stakes are huge. For Michigan, this game may decide the fate of embattled third year coach, Rich Rodriguez. For Ohio State, the contest provides the opportunity for the Buckeyes to win their record-tying sixth consecutive Big Ten title, and secure another BCS Bowl. The weather should be cold, as two high powered offenses take the field to renew one of the greatest rivalries in sports. After a couple of seasons when "The Game" was pretty much a foregone conclusion for Ohio State, this one should be competitive. Buckle up and get ready for a hard-hitting game that may not be decided until late. On offense, Michigan averages 514.5 yards and 36.8 points per game. It all starts and ends with slippery sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson, the first player in NCAA history to throw and run for over 1,500 yards in the same seaon. Though small (6'0" 193) he has proved to be tough, and is very difficult to tackle due to his speed and shiftiness. Robinson is most effective as a runner (1538 yards, 6.8 ypc, 14 td's) but has progressed as a passer (147-232, 2229,16-10) and is difficult to defend. He has shown a propensity for turning the ball over in big games, and Ohio State will try and keep him in hemmed in and make him throw the ball. Last year's starter Tate Forcier has played quite a bit down the stretch and may be used off the bench. He isn't the runner Robinson is, though Forcier can scramble, but he is more or a pure passer who has thrown for 515 yards, hitting on 66.7% of his passes. Know the Opposition: Iowa 11/19/2010

Ohio State heads west to a "Blacked Out" Iowa City on Saturday for a huge game with Big Ten Championship ramifications. This game definitely has lost a little bit of its luster though, as last week Northwestern upset Iowa handing them their third loss of the season. Make no mistake about it, this has been a disappointing season for the Hawkeyes, who started off the season ranked in the top ten and now are fighting just for a decent bowl bid. Expect to see a very angry and desperate Iowa team on Saturday. If they didn't already have enough motivation already, it is also Senior Day. You better believe Ricki Stanzi, Adrian Clayborn and company want to go out as winners and beat an OSU team that ended their Big Ten Championship dreams a season ago. ![]() Dave Thurman (11:12 am) Check out our Know the Opposition feature for full information on Penn State. Below we have five things to look for as the Buckeyes host Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions this afternoon. 1) Watch to see if the Silver Bullets can stop Evan Royster and the Penn State ground game. A year ago Ohio State held the all-time leading rusher in Penn State history to 36 yards on 13 carries. If they can approach that success again it will be a long night for the Lions. Royster, who struggled earlier in the year, comes in on a roll, so the Buckeyes have their hands full. But if they can make PSU one dimensional it will be very hard for the visitors to find the end zone. 2) Watch to see if Terrelle Pryor can have a big game against his homestate school. You know Pryor would love to scorch the Nittany Lions, whose fans have given him grief during his career. Two years ago his fumble cost the Buckeyes a chance to defeat Penn State. Last year Pryor got revenge but didn't put up big numbers through the air. So look for him to be uber excited about this game, which could be a positive or negative depending on how he controls his emotions. Hopfefully he will have his "A" game because if he does, the Bucks will be too much for Penn State to stop Know the Opposition: Penn State 11/12/2010

Ohio State's neighbor to the east comes calling at 3:30 PM Saturday, with a ton of tradition and a newfound confidence. A week after earning his 400th victory, Joe Paterno brings in a Nittany Lion team that struggled early in the year, especially on offense, but is coming off of three straight victories, buoyed by the play of quarterback Matt McGloin who has supplanted heralded but ineffective freshman Rob Bolden. The pieces may be falling into place at just the right time for Penn State, which probably targets the Buckeyes more than any other Big Ten team. On offense, the Lions' struggles have been well documented, as they scored but three points against both Alabama and Iowa, and only 13 versus Illinois. However, the past three weeks PSU has scored 33, 41, and 35 points, and although it has been against some of the worst defenses in the conference, there is no doubt that the line has played better, tailback Evan Royster is in a groove, and the team has responded to McGloin. While Bolden is supposed to play some in this week's game, Paterno will start McGloin who is 41-70 for 551 yards, with 7 touchdowns, with only 1 interception. While he has not faced a defense anywhere near as fierce as Ohio State, the key has been that McGloin has taken care of the ball, as opposed to Bolden who has a 5-7 touchdown to interception ratio. Neither is much of a threat to run, although both have found the end zone once. It will be interesting to see how the young quarterbacks perform in an intimidating setting versus a stingy defense. | SubscribeBuckeye LinksAlong the Olentangy CategoriesAll ArchivesFebruary 2012 |
