Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl: West Team Practice 12/30/2011

Bam Bradley isn't sure he's ready to announce.
Drew Thurman (7:23 pm)

Today was the first of four days worth of practices for the guys in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, which is played on January 3rd. While no Buckeye commitments are playing in the game, there are a handful of prospects on both teams. Bam Bradley and Alex Kozan will be playing for the West Squad, while Demetrious Cox, Jordan Diamond and Camren Williams are playing for the East.

At the West practice, I got a chance to take in a very hard hitting first day of practice featuring Bradley and Kozan. While Bradley could easily pass as an outside linebacker right now, he still showed the quickness to play safety. The West coaches had the offense in a lot of spread formations, and Bradley was in one-on-one coverage most of the afternoon instead of playing deep safety. Bradley held his own too, shutting down practically everyone he guarded, including Greg Garmon. He also stood out as one of the most competitive guys on the field.

"I'm trying to get the M.V.P. trophy," Bradley said. "If they're handing one out, I'm trying to get it."

As for his college choice, there have been many reports saying that Bradley will be announcing at the game what his final destination will be. While that still could happen, he made it clear that he will not announce if he is not ready.

"They (Semper Fi Bowl) asked me and I told them if I am ready then I will, but I also told them if I didn't feel ready, I wouldn't rush into it. I'm playing it day by day. I'm still praying on it and still asking my mom, and I'll know Tuesday if I'm ready to announce."

Spence Stuffs Meyer's Stocking a Week Early 12/18/2011

Dave Thurman (8:06 pm)

Noah Spence, considered by most every recruiting services to be the top weakside defensive end in the class of 2012, gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State this evening following his weekend visit.  Spence, a 6'3" 240 pound specimen from Harrisburg, Pennslyvania (Bishop McDevitt), is a pass rush specialist who has started since his freshman season.  As a junior in 2010 he registered 22 sacks, and is a five-star prospect who will play in the Under Armour All-American game in Orlando on January 5th.

Spence chose Ohio State over scholarship offers from LSU, Florida, Maryland, Penn State, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, and many others.  Combined with the verbals from Adolphus Washington and Se'van Pittman it is safe to say that the Buckeyes will bolster their pass rush in a big way in the next few years.

Welcome aboard Noah!

Recruiting Rundown 12/16 12/16/2011

Drew Thurman (12:32 pm)

After the biggest recruiting weekend of the year, Urban Meyer nabbed commitments from defensive lineman Tommy Schutt and Se'Von Pittman. He also secured the commitment of Bri'onte Dunn. So in one weekend he was able to not only lock in three guys that changed the outlook of the 2012 class, but also massively impacted rival Big Ten schools.

He's not done yet either. With some gaping holes still left in this class and a few big name recruits still on the board, the next couple months should be very interesting. Let's take a look...
* One of those holes that has to be answered is offensive tackle. As I have talked about extensively, not only do the Buckeyes need playmakers there for the future, they need depth this next season at the position. The Buckeyes did host   Kyle Dodson and Jordan Diamond this last weekend, and put themselves in solid standing with both young men. While the possibility of pulling in both guys is definitely not out of the question for Meyer, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.

At the point it would appear Dodson, who committed to Wisconsin back in June, may be closer to choosing the Buckeyes. While he's still committed to the Badgers at this point, he made it clear to multiple news agencies that the Buckeyes gave him a lot to think about. His coach had this to say to the Plain Dealer:

"He felt he owed it to himself to see Coach Meyer," Cleveland Heights coach Jeff Rotsky told The Plain Dealer on Tuesday. "He's going to take his time and really reconfirm. Right now, nothing has changed. He got a chance to meet an incredible person in Coach Meyer. They are not hard-selling at all. They were great."

Newest Buckeye Se'Von Pitman
Dave Thurman (8:20 am)

Urban Meyer might be better with flips than the cook at IHOP.  A few hours after receiving a verbal from Tommy Shutt (who flipped to the Buckeyes from Penn State), the new head coach at OSU received another commitment from defensive end Se'von Pittman (flipping to Ohio State from MSU).  The 6'5", 245-pound Pittman hails from Canton McKinley and was a high school teammate of current Buckeye Steve Miller.  During a fine senior season he made 102 tackles including 20 tackles for loss and 8 sacks, forcing two fumbles and recovering one.

Pittman is rated as a top 100 national player by Rivals who has assigned him four stars.  Scout and 247 Sports also list Se'von as a four-star player, Like Adolphus Washington, Pittman is considered a weakside end and is being brought in to bring more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.  In addition to OSU and Michigan State he had received offers from Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Nebraska and others. He brings the number of verbal commitments in the class of 2012 to eighteen.

With two big commitments to begin the week, the question on everyone's mind is who's next?

Welcome home Se'von!

Dave Thurman (8:11 pm)

Let the Urban Meyer recruiting era officially begin.  Since his hire two weeks ago, Meyer has been hard at work, and it began to pay off today when defensive tackle Tommy Schutt verbaled to the Buckeyes.  Schutt had committed to Penn State this summer, but the combination of the controversy swirling around Happy Valley, combined with the recent announcement of Meyer as the new head coach at OSU, caused him to flip to the Buckeyes.

Schutt, who prepped at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois,  is listed at 6'3", 285 pounds, although some say he is now up to 300.  Scout ranks him as the 5th best defensive tackle in the land, assigning him five stars.  Rivals and 247 Sports both have him as a four star player, although both list Schutt as one of the top 100 players in the nation.

This past season Schutt registered 73 tackles including 27 tackles for loss and 14 sacks as Glenbard West finished with a 10-1 record. He also batted down 11 passes, had an interception and recovered three fumbes.

In addition to Ohio Sate and Penn State, Schutt had scholarship offers from Oregon, USC, Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Duke, Boston College and others.

Combined with the recent verbal of five-star defensive end Adolphus Washington, Ohio State has bolstered what should be a deep and talented line, and Meyer may not be finished yet.  Welcome aboard Tommy Schutt!

Urban's Recruiting Calls: What They Tell Us 12/08/2011

Drew Thurman (11:21 am)

Since being announced as the Ohio State head coach on November 28th, Urban Meyer has made the Buckeyes the hottest commodity in the recruiting world. If his hiring wasn't already big enough to swing some recruits towards Columbus, he's been relentlessly contacting top tier talent from around the country. Those calls have made a big difference too, as the Buckeyes are set to host a handful of four and five star recruits the next couple of weekends.

His work over the last week and a half also shows that fans should prepare for a brand new era in recruiting. Tressel had his very own distinct style of recruiting, and Urban is quickly making a statement of what his will be during his time in Columbus. In fact, there's two big differences already to note.

First, Urban is showing he is going to pursue a lot more players and extend more offers than Tressel ever did. While Tressel was definitely a heavy hitter in the recruiting world, one of the criticisms of his style was that he got burnt at times because of not extending enough offers. The offensive line is a perfect example. The staff year in and year out singled a select few guys to pursue and on multiple occasions only brought in one lineman when things didn't go their way. More offers would have meant more yeses, even if the percentage was the same.

With Urban, fans won't be complaining about that at all. In fact, I've seen some fans questioning why Urban is pursuing so many prospects in 2012 with only possibly 6 more scholarships available in this class. Some of us are still used to the way Tressel conducted his business. This also helps keep things in perspective right now in the midst of all the craziness. Every hour or so it seems like a new recruit is jumping on the Urban bandwagon and is talking about a visit to Ohio State. Just prepare yourself that many of these players are Top 150 type guys that have other big time offers and will end up other places. I'm by no means doubting Urban Meyer or his woo, it's just a reality. That's why he's going after so many players right now. It is insurance. It's a great strategy and one that will yield a few big time players by signing day.

Recruit Talk: Najee Murray 12/05/2011

Check out Murray's senior film by clicking the picture.
Drew Thurman (6:18 pm)

There are tons of new names surfacing in the 2012 class now that Urban Meyer is at the helm, which definitely has Buckeye Nation buzzing about the future. While that excitement is definitely warranted, fans shouldn't forget about some of the talent on board already in this class. One of those guys is Steubenville's Najee Murray.

Murray was technically the first commitment for Luke Fickell in mid-June, thanks to his breakout performance in camp. Many overlooked his commitment at the time, partially due to the slew of allegations that were swirling around Columbus at the time, but Murray's senior season has made people take notice. In fact he was named a D-III first team All-Ohio selection as well as defensive co-player of the year. It's also no coincidence that Scout.com recently elevated him to a four star prospect.

Personally, I'm a fan of how Murray plays the game so I was thrilled to get the opportunity to chat it up with him about his senior season, the coaching change, and his future. Here is what he had to say:

1) Talk a little about your senior season. How do you think you performed?

I had an fantastic senior season. Me and the team ended coming up a little short against Mooney, but we gave it our all.

2) You were named a D-III first team All-Ohio selection as well as defensive co-player of the year?. How did that feel?

It felt great to be named with those awards. I couldn't of done it without my coaches and team.

3) Are there any players currently in college or the NFL you compare your game to?

I would like to compare my game to Tyrann Mathieu.

Fickell & Urban with Josh Perry. (h/t Eleven Warriors)
Drew Thurman (3:07 pm)

As expected, the hiring of Urban Meyer has changed the recruiting landscape for both the Buckeyes and plenty of teams around the country. He has been contacting recruits from the moment he was announced, and it has become clear that he will leave no stone unturned. Committed or uncommitted, Meyer is going after the superstars that could make an instant impact in Columbus.

As things currently stand, the Buckeyes have 16 commitments with the addition of wide receiver Ricquan Southward on Sunday. The word is that Meyer plans to honor all of these commitments, which not only makes sense for future recruiting, but also because this class is already solid. Fickell and company have assembled arguably the second best class in the conference, behind only Michigan, good enough for the 16th best class in 2012 according to Rivals.com. This will limit him a bit this year, as scholarships in this class are a bit limited now with the scholarship reduction. Any transfers though and that number could open up a bit.

With those scholarships, Meyer does have some huge needs to address in 2012 with the two months remaining until signing day. Let's take a look position by position to see where things stand and what players are on Meyer's radar.

Southward Becomes No. 16 11/27/2011

Drew Thurman (8:24 pm)

While we wait for more Urban Meyer news, we can at least celebrate with some recruiting news. Lakeland (FL) wide receiver Ricquan Southward switched his commitment from Miami (FL) to Ohio State tonight, becoming the 16th member of the 2012 class.

Southward, listed at 6-2 190 pounds, is ranked as a 4 star product on ESPN. His film is incredibly impressive, and the young man has playmaker written all over him. Despite losing out on Dwayne Stanford, the Buckeyes now have four wideouts on board in 2012 with Southward, Frank Epitropolous, Mike Thomas, and Roger Lewis. This season has proven that the Buckeyes are as in desperate need of more talent at wide receiver, and will be losing Posey again to graduation. Devin Smith and Evan Spencer show promise for the future, but more bodies are needed. These four guys are definitely a step in a the right direction.

With the Meyer situation going on, many will instantly link this commitment to him, but Southward made it clear to Bill Kurelic that he feels at home in Columbus. He had a great visit during the Penn State game, and has had a great connection with Stan Drayton. One has to wonder if he also sees the major potential for early playing time. Regardless, this is a huge pickup for Ohio State, and the 2012 class continues to beef up despite all the factors swirling around the program.

Check out his film after the jump
