![]() Drew Thurman (9:18 am) As the Buckeyes look ahead to a Rose Bowl battle against Oregon, there is a lot more at stake than just closing the season out with a win against the Ducks. The Buckeyes and the Big Ten both have their reputation on the line, and maybe even more interesting, Tressel's legacy is at risk. It's hard to believe with his resume of accomplishments that he has to worry about his image, but Buckeye fans are getting impatient. Sure, Tressel has dominated Michigan since he came to Columbus, boasting an incredible 8-1 record against that school up north. Not only the Wolverines, but Tressel has owned the Big Ten. In fact, the Buckeyes have had at least a share of the Big Ten Title for five straight years. Oh, and I almost forgot, he brought Buckeye Nation a National Championship in 2002. So why is there so much pressure to beat Oregon? Simple, fans want big game wins. This wasn't the case a few years ago, as Tressel was on a run of winning four straight bowl games, three of which were Fiesta Bowl wins (1 National Championship). Things turned though at the most unexpected time, as Troy Smith and the Buckeyes were heavy favorites against an inferior Gator team in the 2006 National Championship. They would be shocked by Urban Meyer and company 41-14 though (the most painful numbers in OSU history), and since then Tressel's prestige has plummeted. Since that beatdown by the Gators, the Buckeyes have never been able to get over the big game blues. It has been rough going with losses from LSU, Texas, and twice to USC. In that time, Tressel has gone from media darling to one of the most criticized coaches around. Buckeye fans have bought into those complaints, and are growing increasingly impatient with each disappointment on a national stage. So, with all that said, I think it is clear that a Buckeye victory in the Rose Bowl is vital for Tressel's lasting legacy. Not only for that, but Tressel should be concerned about his image currently. Buckeye fans will only have so much patience for continual bowl losses, and one has to even wonder how well Tressel can keep recruiting until he wins a big one again. He needs to turn things around and get momentum on his side, and a Rose Bowl victory will certainly do that. Let's not downplay how big this game is for next year as well. With all the returning stars on offense, including Pryor, the Buckeyes could be ready to once again contend for a National Championship. It will be hard for this team to focus on that goal if they are still having to answer questions about losing big games. Instead, they need to prove to themselves and to the country that they have what it takes, starting with Oregon. That is a lot of pressure on one game, but it is coming increasingly important for Tressel and the Buckeyes to turn their image around. At some point, fans aren't going to be satisfied with conference titles and wins over Michigan. That sounds incredibly selfish, but legacies are built on National Championships and big game wins, not just beating out a conference that has proven itself as average in recent years. Don't get me wrong Tressel has done some incredible things for the Buckeyes in his tenure, but four straight bowl losses would be hard to deal with. CommentsJack 12/08/2009 07:05
i agree with your thoughts. tressel was under heat after purdue, and then answered by beating penn state and iowa. i think people will get restless again if we lose to oregon. i am not predicting a loss at all, but the fallout would be huge if they do!

Legacy? Win the Rose Bowl to preserve/ensure his legacy? My olfactory indicators sense a miasma.

I think you are right on. From a perspective of a Ducks fan and also someone who lives in Pac-10 territory, I think the perception a lot of fans have out here is that Ohio State is good, and has very good players, but as a team is often overrated. I believe that this is a national perception as well. Another loss in a big BCS game, and against a team such as Oregon, would cement this perception in the minds of a lot of football fans around the nation. And it would undoubtedly leave an awfully sour taste in the collective mouths of Buckeye fans. Not that any bowl loss is accepted well, but one can psychologically better deal with a loss against a team who has historically been a national power (Texas, USC, LSU, etc) which, as of yet, Oregon isn't perceived as being. If oregon beats OSU, especially if it is by ten or more points, Tressel may be on the hot seat in a lot of the Buckeye fans minds. I think it could be rectified with a BCS bowl win the following year, but he would certainly be under the microscope and under a lot more pressure until then. Personally, I think Oregon will win this game and if it happens, I don't think Buckeye fans should feel any worse because it is against Oregon. I may be delusional, but I think Oregon can beat any team in the country if they play anywhere close to their capability. I guess we will find out on Jan 1 under the sunny skies of southern California in the Granddaddy of them all. Go Ducks!

Duckoff...you wouldn't understand legacy because Oregon doesn't have real tradition. At Ohio State it is about tradition and each coach wants a piece of the storied history. Fans watch the game much more than bringing back their youth, it is a passion and a obsession. That's why we our stadium seats over 100,000 and yours seats 50,000. Ohio is football, it is about legacy and tradition.

Honestly tradition is fine, but we are talking about 20 year-olds who don't care about tradition. They care about winning and having fun. I am a Duck fan, and realize that tOSU is a good team, but "dotting the i" won't help stop Masoli and James. Both teams are good THIS YEAR, and past years aren't going to determine the winner of this game. Just look at Boise State and Michigan this year? Which team is the "traditional" power and which is in the BCS? Oregon has plenty of tradition, and was founded only 6 years after Ohio State. Oregon football started only 4 years after Ohio State, so lets start comparing this year's team. Either one can win, that's why they play the game.

Where did all you Ducks fans come from? Was there a link that brought you here or are you slowly trying to take over all OSU Blogs?

I wasn't saying that tradition meant wins or that we would win because of it. I was saying that there is something to legacy. Duckoff acted like there was nothing more to college football than betting and remembering your youth. I was saying that is not the case in Ohio. Football is a religion here, and legacy is important to players and coaches. Ask them!

If football is a religion where you live, then where you live is seriously twisted. I've lived in Eugene my entire life...I'm a fifth generation UO graduate and a huge Duck fan who has missed only a handful of games over the last 30 years...but c'mon, a religion?

As an Oregon fan, I personally respect OSU. I don't why all the other Duck fans feel the need to talk trash. I think we have the upper hand this year, but I would love to have all of your BCS appearances in the last decade. The Pac-10 has a bad image at times too, and just like Ohio State, Oregon will be representing the conference.

1) Tressel's image is circling the drain right now. He can keep winning the B10 championship and beating sh*tty Michigan teams but ask yourself why no one outside of Ohio or Michigan is impressed. Win the big ones!

As an Oregon grad and die-hard Duck fan, I'm embarrassed at some of the comments our Duck brethren have posted. I now live in Austin and vividly remember all the great comments Long Horn fans made about tOSU fans the last time UT played in Columbus.

Those of us that have been PAC-10 Football Fans for more than 5mins admire the long successful history of Ohio State football. Coach Tressel has many fine scalps hanging on his belt! This game will not be the cake walk that some (young) Duck bloggers are predicting. I will be as nervous as a cat at a dog show until the final whistle blows. On New Years Day Duck & Buck supporters will learn much about their teams and coaching staff's. I can guarantee you one thing. CK will not be taking this game lightly. As a longtime Duck ticket holder I feel pride that Oregon's opponent in the Granddaddy of all Bowl games "The RoseBowl" is Ohio State = bona fide heavy weight champion.
