Just moments ago Cameron Burrows announced his decision to commit to the Buckeyes at Trotwood-Madison High School, making him the first player to jump on board in the 2013 class. He chose the Buckeyes over Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Wisconsin and Tennessee.

Burrows is a 6-2 195 pound cornerback, and possesses the rare combination of size, speed, and physicality at the position. He is highly regarded as well, being ranked as one of the best two or three players in the state next season by almost everyone. Rivals ranks him as a five star prospect, while Scout and 247Sports rank him at a four star, but all three view him as a Top 100 type player. Burrows will also be playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl next January.

Burrows said during his announcement presser that "Urban Meyer is everything you'd want in a coach." Further proof of how quickly Meyer has built relationships and made impressions. This is also big because there were rumors of tension between Jim Tressel and Maurice Douglass (head coach of Trotwood-Madison). The Buckeyes under Tressel showed very little love to their program and overlooked several of their players in past years. This will no longer be the case. Urban Meyer has already worked hard to build a strong relationship with Trotwood-Madison, and it very clear he sees the major talent emerging from the school in recent years.

Make no mistake about it, this is a huge commitment moving forward. Not only is Burrows a big-time player at a position of need, but being ranked as of the best players in Ohio, is an important get for Meyer and company. They plan to once again lock down the best players in the state and leave other programs fighting for the second tier guys. With Jalin Marshall announcing at the end of this month and rumors of the Buckeyes being the favorite, that statement may just get louder. You can check out Burrow's junior highlights after the break.

Burrows has great size and speed for a DB. He is really athletic and tagged as a shutdown corner type. I'm not sure if anyone watched the D-II state final game where Trotwood Madison won but Burrows got outplayed by the WR from Avon ( Eckahrdt 9 catches 102 yds 1 TD). Now Eckahrdt is All-Ohio and will play at a small D-I college but if Burrows is this awesome then I'd expect him to have shut him down? Just a concern because sometime these kids get over-hyped and there size/speed are often the only thing they are judged on. Anyone else see that game?

I didn't get a chance to watch that game, read a lot about it. In fact, if you click my name above, you will see a piece from Bill Greene on the game ($). Burrows wasn't exactly a fan of his own performance. I would chalk it up to being one game. He had several big games to get them there.

Also to reassure you...he's not just ranked high by recruiting services, he had big time offers...including LSU and Alabama. Recruiting isn't an exact science and there are plenty of surprises and busts, but the combination of big time offers and high recruiting rankings typically is going to be right more times than not. For what it is worth, I think his film is very impressive. I see a Jimmy Smith/Nnamdi Asomugha type player.

I totally agree that he could have just had a bad game but it just happen to be against the best WR he'd face all year and the biggest game of the year. I think that a high percentage of 5 star/ blue chip players are flops. Go through the past years on every major recruiting website and the list of 5 star flops is pretty large. On the other hand the list of 3 star kids that make it big has gotten larger( Hawk,Holmes,Sanzenbacher) My whole point with all this is to show how imperfect the evaluation has been over the years. As a Buckeye fan I hope Burrows is for real but sometimes I think these coaches and "evaluators" get caught up in speed, size, athleticism and potential at the next level when maybe they overlook certain traits.

That list of three stars making it big hasn't gotten bigger. That's a complete myth. The ratio of five stars becoming All-Americans is significantly larger than three-stars to All-Americans.

Adam - I definitely get the point you are trying to make. Still, as I stated before, it isn't an exact science. As Jacob accurately pointed out, while the rating system isn't 100 percent accurate, by enlarge it does a pretty good job.

As to your issue of looking at size, speed, athleticism, and potential - there are so many factors that play into success at the next level (from level of competition in high school to development and scheme in college) that I'm not sure what else you want them to look for. The NFL Draft is very much based on similar criteria.

As to those other "certain traits." I don't know the kid, but from all accounts he seems like a great young man.

-He's a proven winner.
-His coach says he's one of the most humble young men he has coached, who isn't just about getting attention.
-His coach also said, "He's the kind of young man every father would want for his daughter."

From what you've stated Burrows seems like a great kid and I hope that he stays that way. I'm not trying to bash the system but I just see alot of inconsistencies among the bigger recruiting sites.( makes you wonder which site has it right?) I did go thru Rivals previous 5 Star guys all the way back to 2001 and I was amazed how many players on that list panned out and how many didn't. It seemed like alot of OL prospects were the most inconsistent. The other thing to realize about Burrows is that he still has another High School season to be played. Hopefully he can polish his skills for another year. I's also like to see Mcray come with him to OSU.
