Name: Davonte James
School: Springfield HS (Springfield, OH)
Height/Weight: 6-3/220 pounds
Rankings: No. 10 ILB by 247Sports, 4 star rating by 247Sports
The 2014 class is loaded with linebackers in the state of Ohio. Sitting on the top of that list would be Dante Booker, who I've already previously introduced. Next up on the list would be St. Clairsville's Michael Ferns, who has already committed to Michigan. While those two have garnered most the attention, fans shouldn't forget about Springfield product, Davonte James.
James has tremendous size for a junior at 6-3 220 pounds, and has already proven he is a big hitter and a sound tackler. Last year as a sophomore he amassed 52 tackles and one interception, and many expect this season to be a breakout year for him. Not surprisingly, he's also drawing comparisons to former Springfield player Trey DePriest, who is currently at Alabama.
Right now his recruitment is just heating up. He's close to grabbing an offer from Georgia Tech, and is receiving plenty of interest from the Midwest powers including Ohio State. Back in May he expressed a preference in Ohio State, but seems to be playing things a bit more cool now.
What He's Said:
Rather than quoting sources, I chatted with Davonte directly last week. Here is what he had to say about where his recruitment stands...
What did you think of Friday Night Lights? How did you feel you performed?
DJ: I thought it was very intense and very competitive. I thought I performed very well.
Did you get a chance to talk with the coaches? What did they tell you?
DJ: Yes I did. They said great job, keep working, and we will be watching you this season.
Are you still in contact with them?
What other schools showing interest in you right now?
DJ: Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
Do you have a list of favorites yet?
DJ: No not yet.
Are you taking any visits this fall?
DJ: Yes a couple. Georgia Tech for sure. I don't know when yet, but I'm definitely going.
Have you and Thaddeus Snodgrass talked about going to the same school at all?
DJ: No not really but we talk to each other about recruiting.
