Hard to believe that Ohio State’s recruiting class of 2013 is nearly finished. With the Sept. 1 kick-off just around the corner, the Buckeyes stand at 16 verbal commitments out of a class that is likely 20 unless more current players leave.
The recruiting class began with 15 known spots due to graduating seniors. Then, Brian Bobek transferred to Minnesota and Kenny Hayes left the team for health reasons (though it was rumored he was visiting Michigan State, to whom he has now transferred) freeing up 2 more spaces. With Adam Bellamy’s future uncertain, scholarships are pilling up. Some believe the class will be over 20 but given the fact that the coaches told Derrick Green there is no room for him after Tavion Jacobs committed, it has to signal limited space. Here is the projected finish for the last four spots.
Tyquan Lewis: He is a lock to join Ohio State in my opinion. In a recent interview, he mentioned that his chances of attending OSU are high. He has a great relationship with Mike Vrabel and has already been told he will play the “Viper” position, a DE/LB hybrid. The only thing that would stop Lewis is home. With UNC being his second choice, the main issue for him is how strongly he wants to stay home. Look for him to commit to OSU before October.
Shelton Gibson: Sources that know Gibson have mentioned that he will likely choose OSU. Before Friday Night Lights, there were reports about his academics not being in line with OSU standards, a story that may be untrue. He dazzled at Friday Night Lights and interest seemed to pick up. Unless Auburn makes a strong move, I see him choosing Ohio State.
James Quick/Marquez North/Devon Allen: Meyer always wants to add speed and one of these three would be a welcome addition to the Buckeyes. Everyone is picking Louisville for Quick and the word on North is he wants to stay close to home. Not much news about Allen has surfaced. I would not be surprised if all three went elsewhere but Urban would love to add one of the three and he seems to be recruiting North the hardest.
Mike Mitchell/Daniel McMillian/Christopher Worely: It was once thought that Mike Mitchell was an OSU lock but recent reports have him backing off. It is a four team race with Texas A&M, Florida State, and Oklahoma. Daniel McMillian’s name has surfaced after Florida’s WR coach and recruiting coordinator Aubrey Hill left the Gators over his involvement with the University of Miami (FL) scandal. With two 4-star decommits from UF already, McMillian has stated he will take visits and OSU will be one. I like OSU’s chances if he indeed visits. Christopher Worley is another product of Cleveland Glenville and Ted Ginn Sr. It is hard to ever picture an OSU class without someone from the CG pipeline. News on him has been sparse but with fellow Tarblooders Cardale Jones and De’van Bogard already on the team, it will be hard for Worley not to continue the pipeline.
Vonn Bell: It is uncertain where he will end up but a source close to Bell feels it is the SEC to beat. With high interest in Alabama while growing up a Vols fan, Bell will be hard to pry away from the South. Urban will recruit him hard and his recent list still has the Buckeyes on it but I think he eventually goes SEC. I hope I am wrong.
The final four spots of the 2013 class go to:
1. Tyquan Lewis
2. Shelton Gibson
3. Donovan Munger
4. Mike Mitchell
The Buckeyes will definitely make a space for Vonn Bell, if he is showing strong interest, and I am sure the Buckeyes will make every effort to add him to the class.
Urban and company have shown a knack for pulling “rabbits out of hats” during this recruiting process. Names like Ezekiel Elliott, Tavion Jacobs and Timothy Gardner were not even on the radar screen before they verbally committed. With a broad net cast by the OSU staff, don’t be surprised to be surprised by the finish of 2013.
